  • Doha turns to foreign exporters as food shortage continues

As the diplomatic row intensifies, Qatar has been forced to turn to foreign exporters. On Sunday, Iran sent planes full of food to Doha. It's promised to send 100 tons of fresh fruit and legumes every day. Qatar relies heavily on imports from neighbouring countries for much of its food supplies. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut links with the country last week, accusing it of supporting and financing terrorism. Qatar denies the claims. To ease the food shortage, it's also put workers at a meat processing plant onto extra shifts to double the output of chicken, beef and lamb. • Ships arrive at Doha port via new Oman route

(14 Jun 2017) Qatar's port has begun receiving ships through a newly opened sea route. The Gulf nation began shipping and receiving cargo through Oman to bypass other Gulf countries that have cut off sea routes to Qatar. Cargo ships have started to arrive in Doha's Hamad Port via Sohar Port in Oman. Captain Abdul Aziz al Yafei, Director of Hamad Port, said there are plans for seven trips a week between the two ports. Typically, cargo for Qatar stops at Dubai's massive deep-water Jebel Ali Port, or in the Emirati capital of Abu Dhabi, then gets put on smaller boats heading to Doha. But since June 5, the UAE has joined Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt in cutting off sea traffic to Qatar as part of the severing of diplomatic ties over Qatar's alleged support of extremists groups and ...

Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has opened the new Hamad Port as part of a wider plan to increase non-petroleum exports. It means larger container ships can go directly to Doha rather than docking in the United Arab Emirates, where cargo used to be transferred to smaller vessels. The UAE is one of the countries that have imposed a land, air and sea blockade on Qatar. The port will have an annual capacity of 7.5 million shipping containers, and separate terminals dedicated to general cargo, cereal, vehicles and livestock. It is expected to be fully operational by 2020, when it will cover around 20sq km. The existing Doha port will then be transformed into an international cruise ship terminal. But since June 5, the UAE has joined Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt in cutting off sea traffic to Qatar as part of the severing of diplomatic ties over Qatar's alleged support of extremists groups and close ties to Iran. Qatar's port authority said its cargo will go through Sohar, as well as Oman's port at Salalah, bypassing the need to dock in any of those countries that have cut ties. Global shipper Maersk already has said it will begin using Salalah for its shipments to Qatar. The MSC Sao Paulo used to leave China for the UAE and then head to Doha directly, before continuing on to Saudi Arabia and then Iraq. Due to the sea blockade, the ship has had to reroute and start in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and then end it's trip in Doha. Officials at the Qatar Ports Management Company say it has only caused a two-to-three day delay in receiving the shipment.
